Over the past three years, the Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Source Protection Committee has been working on a review and amendments of the Source Protection Plans for Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Source Protection Areas.
The proposed amendments have been circulated to municipalities, ministries and other implementing bodies for their review and comment.
The deadline for pre-consultation comments is October 14, 2022.
Key changes in the proposed amendments include:
- Changes to wellhead protection areas (WHPA), such as Belgrave
- Fuel tanks more than 250 litres may require a risk management plan (RMP) if close to a municipal well
- Road salt management plans will be required for municipalities
- Risk management plans may be required for salt application and storage in areas close to municipal wells
- Transporting snow into the 100-metre zones around municipal wells will be prohibited
- Future storage of certain toxic chemicals will be prohibited in the 100-metre zone of a municipal well, with risk management elsewhere
- Ongoing education to promote source water protection in vulnerable areas

Ministry and municipal comments received as part of the pre-consultation process will be reviewed by the Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley (ABMV) Source Protection Committee (SPC) and possible changes made to policies prior to public consultation proposed in early 2023.
